    • German-American cellist and teacher; b. Garbeck, Jan. 10, 1825;d. Roxbury, Mass., April 29, 1902. He was mainly autodidact. After playing in the Bergen (Norway) theater orch. (from 1842) and at Old Bull?s concerts, he settled in Boston in 1847, where he was a founder-member of the Mendelssohn Quintette Club (1849?72). In 1873 he became a founder-member of the Beethoven Quartet and was a member of the Boston Sym. Orch. in 1881?82. He became a teacher at the New England Cons, of Music (1869), Carlyle Petersilea?s Music School (1871), and the Boston Cons, of Music (1889).
